There are an awful lot of Arkansans who are “unbanked” and “underbanked,” and there's FDIC data about that too. A report released in October found that, as of 2013, 12.3 percent of our state's residents had no relationship with a bank at all, and another 25.7 percent had bank accounts but also relied on alternative — often very expensive — financial services. That's 38 percent of our state, much higher than national averages (7.7 percent unbanked and 20 percent underbanked).
